Vern Flay’s love of music remains strong, and his connection to the Milton Town Band will continue. Vern has been a part of the Milton Town Band for nearly 20 years now. He recently passed on the band master’s baton to Steven Hladio, but will still play with the group. Steven Hladio is now the band’s master, and Vern recently had his first concert as a player, marking a new chapter in Vern’s time with the band. Vern is looking forward to playing in more concerts, and he also played at this year’s Anzac Day event in Milton, demonstrating his commitment to the band and the community. Vern has been a member of the Milton Town Band since 2002 after moving to the region from Sydney. He plays all the brass instruments – mostly trombone, euphonium, tuba, and French horn. Vern is no longer the band master, a role he held for several decades, but he is still an integral part of the group. He said he enjoyed being “part of the sound” rather than the person who had to “get the sound out of other people”. Vern is looking forward to playing in more concerts and continuing to share his passion for music with the community. As a former band master, Vern has a deep understanding of the band’s history and the importance of its role in the community. He has been with the band during its ups and downs, including a lean period when the band had only six musicians, and has helped to grow the group through his teaching and recruiting efforts.
Vern has been a valuable asset to the band, and his continued involvement will be a welcome addition to the group. The Milton resident is proud of the band’s long relationship with the Milton Public School, playing at the fete, regular performances at Christmas time at the hospital, and on Anzac Day. Vern said music is something that children should be introduced to, and that it gives them a great deal of self-discipline, creative enjoyment, and extends the brain. Vern enjoys starting off on a musical journey with a young player and seeing them “make connections with the things you are teaching them” and starting to work out things for themselves, like rhythm patterns. Vern’s love of music remains strong, and his connection to the Milton Town Band will continue. Subscriptions
